Tasmeem Doha, art and design conference 2019
Tasmeem Doha is an international, biennial art and design conference hosted and organized by VCUarts Qatar since 2004. Each edition of Tasmeem Doha highlights a unique and contemporary theme within art and design, exploring novel concepts, methods, and applications, and engaging in critical discussions. The event is open to the public, with attendees and participants consisting of international designers, artists, academics, students, industry professionals, and the local community.
Hekayat 2019
In Arabic, “Hekayat” means stories, narratives, tales, anecdotes. It is a theme that is not exclusive to art and design, but relatable to our wider community. Anyone and everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or nationality, can relate to stories. Stories are how we create meaning. Stories are universal. Stories are human.
At the heart of Hekayat is the process – the journey of an idea reaching fruition. Over the next three days, we will explore the hurdles, challenges, and successes that happen as we create. It is these layers that are often edited out of the conversation that we precisely wish to highlight. Also, how the story is told is as important as the story itself.
You are invited to rethink stories and processes in a multitude of ways through our program of talks, workshops, exhibitions, and activities. You are encouraged to consider the complexity of narrative, to form new interpretations, and to share your ideas – there is no Hekayat without sharing! We want to celebrate this exchange in all its forms. Ultimately, we hope you will leave with a unique experience and meaning of Hekayat.

We started this journey over a year ago. The four of us, from different backgrounds and disciplines, came together excited to be the fi rst alumni team to lead Tasmeem Doha 2019.
