ABOUT TASMEEM
Tasmeem Doha is a biennial international conference focusing on unique and contemporary themes in art and design. The 2015 edition focused on the theme of "playfulness" as expressed by the Arabizi word 3ajeeb! (ahh-jhee-b) meaning "strange in a strange way, cool in a cool way, and slightly weird in a slightly weird way".
OPENING SPEAKER: PORS & RAO
Pors & Rao are a Bangalore based Indo-Danish art duo, making sculptures and installations that often involve mechanical movement and responsive behaviours. They are interested in the involuntary aspects of human behaviour - of what lies outside our knowledge and control.
CLOSING SPEAKER: CASEY NEISTAT
Casey Neistat is an award-winning New York based filmmaker. He is the writer, director, editor, and star of the series The Neistat Brothers on HBO. His main body of work consists of short films he has released exclusively on the Internet. His online films have been viewed over 100 million times in the last three years.
SHAWARMA SESSIONS
During the afternoons on March 9 and 10, we enjoyed a tasty mix of slow-roasted creative personalities rolled into a savory wrap of inspiring goodness.
A select group of workshop leaders from the 3ajeeb! Studios discussed their creative praxis in short-format presentations followed by Q&A sessions.
DAY OFFF
Tasmeem + OFFF
Curated by Barcelona-based OFFF, the Day OFFF showcased speakers, performances and presentations from fresh, young, fun, contemporary creative thinkers. OFFF orchestrates digital festivals for contemporary artists, designers, filmmakers and performers. OFFF takes place in Barcelona annually, while it tours the world as OFFF on Tour for the rest of the year.
FESTIVAL DAY
The last day of Tasmeem 3ajeeb! featured an all-day festival at VCUQatar. Attendees interacted with workshop outcomes, viewed exhibitions, browsed local wares, played games, watched performances and enjoyed being 3ajeeb!
3AJEEB! STUDIOS
The 3ajeeb! Studios were comprised of 25 workshops led by multidisciplinary artists, designers, architects, performers and musicians. The outcomes were exhibited during the Festival Day on March 12. Participation in the studios was limited to faculty, students and select guests.
ARTIST MINI GOLF
Visiting artists Robin Schwartzman and Tom Loftus collaborated with VCUQatar students and faculty to create a unique “artist mini-golf” course for Tasmeem 3ajeeb!. Small, collaborative teams engaged in a rigorous design process from conceptual ideation to final production to create a 9-hole course in only five weeks. The final course was open for everyone to play during Tasmeem.
TASMEEM IN THE CLASSROOM
During the Fall 2014 semester, students and faculty at VCU, both in Doha & Richmond, explored the theme of “3ajeeb!” and created a variety of “cool, strange, and slightly weird” projects. A selection of projects will be on display at the VCUQatar Gallery during Tasmeem.
