Tasmeem Doha 2011
takes place at the VCUQatar campus
Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Education City, Doha.
VCUQatar boasts an impressive building with an exterior reminiscent of the heritage and culture of Qatar and an interior in which student projects line the hallways showcasing a vibrant contemporary design and art school.
The campus has an international gallery and large atrium that are main venues for exhibitions, lectures, conferences, fashion shows and a variety of community and student-led events.
In the fall of 2010, the campus more than doubled in size. The expansion provided additional studios for the academic programs and integrate the VCUQatar Center for Research in Design, the MFA program, the Office of Design Entrepreneurship and Alumni Affairs on campus. There is also expanded exhibition space, café, student lounges and prayer rooms.
Qatar’s culture and heritage has formed the bedrock of its modern society, its social warmth provides the foundation for the country’s bottomless hospitality, and its music and handicrafts are the inspiration of modern artists and artisans.
The government, encouraged by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and HH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, has embarked on a multifaceted approach to preserving the culture and heritage of the country.
The bustle and vitality of the old souqs has been recreated in Souq Waqif amidst buildings featuring traditional architecture. There you will find handicrafts on display as well as traditional foods, fabrics and art. Young Qataris are being encouraged to set up businesses promoting old crafts and traditions.
Qatar Foundation (QF), chaired by HH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, promotes cultural richness and preservation of the country’s heritage. Libraries, magnificent collections of Arabic writings, calligraphy and art, are all being made available for research and public appreciation through QF, the Qatar Museums Authority, and the National Council for Culture, Heritage and the Arts.
