Workshop: Rules of Patterns: The link between rules and outcome; technology and visual poetry, reason and uncertainty

Repetitive patterns possess an underlying rule structure that governs the individual cell, the placement, the frequency, the color and the orientation of elements in the pattern. Often this rule structure is not identified until the pattern is repeated by someone other than the designer, requiring quantification and communication that primarily serves in the manufacture, printing or production of the pattern. Often the pattern is the simple result of a preconceived visual image.

This workshop will empower students with the ability to generate an underlying structure for a pattern or sequence of patterns without predicting the visual outcome.
